What kind of clam is this?

Shaun, don't think anyone is arguing with you personally. The funny thing is I was using the drawings from your first post in reaching my incorrect change of opinion. lol. The mystery one, at 3AM looked much longer than tall... I see what you are saying though (and the pic of the shell helped tremendously. So on a maxima the length will be roughly twice the height? Very interesting stuff; thanks for the information.

Anyway, you provided some great information. I am going to look for the book recommended. Have a safe 4th.

that clams is a crocea. no doubt in my mind. crocea clams can have later scutes on their shells. they lose the scutes as they burrow into the rockwork and as they grow, new scutes can arise.

as for the "hybrids"...i've seen people calling crocea clams hybrids for a while now. but i haven't seen any strong evidence for their being a "hybrid". all of the individuals that are claimed to be hybrid are croceas with larger than normal scutes imho. sometimes these clams have very unique coloration, but no real evidence for hybridization.

Sorry about that; I think I had a "moment" when I was writing that post. My apologies if I came off as a jerk or a know it all...

No need to apologize, though it is appreciated. I posted my comments when it was late and in my head it made sense, lol. After going back through your post and the pics I totally got what you were saying. So no worries. Thanks again for the information.

LOL this thread is too funny.

The clam is defiantly a Crocea. The clam ID thread that was provided above is the best clam ID there is that I have ever seen.

And for those of you still thinking you have a rare "hybrid Maxea" give this a read. Skinz is a old friend of mine, you may have noticed he has 2 sticky's at the top of this clam forum too. He knows his clams and you may notice he has a Crocea just like the one in question here. Please give those threads a read, you may just learn something new about clams.:D
