What kind of conch(?) is this?

its not a conch.
its a snail. i had one years ago when i got into the hobby. i believe it was listed as some type of sand or substrate snail. they do burrow through the substrate when on it but also ventue other places off the substrate. the only thing that worried me when i had one was the long tube it would extend(predator?). in any case I never had any problems with him that i remember. i tossed him in my sump and forgot about him when i dumped the sand out. they do have pretty orange spots all over thier shell. search snails not a conch and you should be able to find it somewhere on line. search sand sifting snail or orange spot snail......i cant totally remember the name but i think itb was something like that.

found it! it is in the above family i mentioned heres a picture of yours!

It's actually an Episcopal Miter (Mitra Mitra). From the Indo-Pacific. Grows to 4 inches.

Where did you get it? It's cool...

Thanks for the identification of this guy.

I got him while on a purchasing trip at Reef Splendor. (I only saw them there the one time).

Linda C., as Reef Splendor is strictly wholesale now, can an individual go in there if they meet an LFS minimum order? If so, do you happen to know what the minimum purchase is?

Thanks, and sorry to jack the thread a bit.

Kinda what I figured. My LFS goes down and handpicks sometimes, I'm quite sure he'll let me cruise down with him.

Thanks.

Hey heads up on the mitre. They ONLY eat peanut worms that they find in the sand and on the rocks. tHey starve after a few months.

Every few days I see him on the clown fish algae clip. Don't know if he is eating or just likes to hang out there but the clip is a very popular spot in my tank....usually a fish and critter pileup (as you can see by the photo)

If you do a search on Mitres you'll see what I mean. I've never had one for more than a few months. This is one of those critters best left in the ocean :(
