If you will be keeping small jumpers like gobies they can easily pass thru the egg crate so use tight glass. If only large jumpers (like wrasses) then eggcrate otherwise you don't need to cover the tank at all.
I have a shrimp goby and only 1/4 of my tank is covered with eggcrate, the rest is open top. The eggcrate is mainly to drop light levels for some of the LPS.
