what kind of saltwater do you use?

i mix my own now. i've used tropic marine pro, ocean pure and seachem reef. i just got a bunch of oceanpure pro from anthony. honestly i cant tell the difference. the only thing i can tell is how well the salt mixes. oceanpure mixes the cleanest with no build up.

I buy from LFS. Don't know where they get it from. However, they told me that it was the biggest wholesaler that that got it from. Most of the Southern California use that company.

I use Catalina, Scripps and the stuff from Corona (newport harbor marinte institute place) m I just got 40 gallons from scripps yesterday, water changes tonight :-)

They actually buy it from someone that has a whole truck load of water and fill up the 2 giant containers of water. According to LFS, the wholesaler got the water deep under the sea, probably not too far off the shore, but deep. The dealer would filter it before selling to the LFS. I got it for $2 @ 5 Gal.

thats catalina salt water.. they collect that water in the harbor and then send it through a sand filter.. i used it once.. it gave my fish ick.. will never use it again...

if you have a reef tank you are better off getiing an RODI unit and mixing the salt water yourself... if it fowlr you may not care...

ill take that yellow tang when you come to get the roids...:D

I use IO salt and RO/DI water....i wouldn't want to buy water from the LFS - i dont know where it really came from and how clean it really is.
I guess you could buy from an LFS, but you'd have to test it everytime and even then...there may be bad things in there that you cannot test for.

dang! catalina salt water is that bad? ive been using it, and when i did have ick i'd do water changes and the ick would be gone.

I've used Catalina and never had any issues. I dont think the ich came in with the water but it may have been related to a cause. If I had a choice, I'd use the water from UCSB. Especially after seeing the filtration process with my own eyes.
I mix my own SW now (Tropic Marin Pro) mainly because I'm too lazy to go to the LFS and get water. I dont have anything thats picky about water quality so I dont worry about it. Call me irresponsible but the only issue I've been having to deal with are flatworms and the heat. Everything else has been fine.

I would agree with moonpod, I have a 60 gallon drum that I mix 50 gallons of water at a time. Just dump in a bag of Ocean Pure this weekend, and do a water change next weekend :D
