what kind of skimmer does everyone use?

i am thinking about buying a new skimmer and was wondering what everyone was running and the pros and cons of the skimmer. thanks:beer:

Vertex IN-180, it works just fine for me. Bill bought one and put a bubble blaster pump on it and pulls mega mucky scum out with it.

I ahve an MRC MR 2. know nothing about it.. havent run it yet.

Great skimmer, I ran one for years on my 280. It kicked but. Is it single or dual beckett? what pump?

Pros: Pulls tons of funk out.
Cons: can be loud, needs a big pressure pump

I am running a CS200 Econo Cone made by Royal Reef Aquariums. Using Bubble Blaster 2000 pump.

Pros: cone, pretty quiet, Pulls some junk
Cons: Cones can be expensive, but this one is a great price.

Vertex IN 250 With Bubble Blaster 3000 pump, This is far from a standard skimmer but the Combo can match any much higher priced Skimmer out there. I know for a fact as I have ran an Super Octo XP 5000 Cone and they both pull the same Rancid Skimate..
Bill

Rick, i was going to put it on a GenX pcx 40, as its the same as the iwaki 55, but now it looks like it is going to be mainifolded off my main pump, so either the dart or the barracuda will be hooked to it. I saw it in action when I got it. it was full of all kinds of crazy mud. looked like the fish took a dump right inside it.

Rick is that the skimmer that a local reef made and is now marketing.

Lindsey, Should work fine with the main pump. That skimmer likes lots of pressure. I had a Mag 18 running mine connected with 1 ft of tube. So it was getting pretty much 1800 GPH  I know what you mean about looking like fish dump sludge, mine would get like 1" thick on the inside ot the collection cup.

Zef, Yea he is actually in FL. I picked it up when I picked up my tank in June.

Rick. how did you get yours dialed in? I am having alot of milky water exiting the discharge. Fishdoc said to put a U-Tube on the intake inside the black box. I only have a single Beckett. with that Gen X it turned teh entire sump white with microbubbles. I was truly amazed cause the air valve was barely open.

thats a nice looking skimmer for a good price what is the footprint? i only have about 7x12 spot for a skimmer for a 75 gallon tank. i currently have an aquac ev 180 because of the small footprint but i want to go with a needle wheel skimmer.

I use a reef octopus extreme 160 in my hundred. I need to clean out the narsty black sludge every other day.

It works like a charm and has a very smal footprint. The sump level does need to be consistent for it to work properly.

It is my favorite skimmer and I have used quite a few.

I have a Warner Marine K2 cone, which is awesome, but WM has discontinued their skimmer line. AquaMaxx has taken over their import models, my next will probably be one from them, love the Sicci pumps they use, super low power consumption, and very quiet.

WM K2
Cons: Price for cone model (and no longer in production)
Pros: Silent, skims awesome, great pump, EXCELLENT TUNING WITH GATE VALVE

AquaMaxx
Cons: no gate valve adjustment, only pipe.
Pros: Same as Warner Marine (cones are now half price, but imported), same great pumps, they moved the hose silencer to attach to the pipe opposed to the skimmer cup lid, which required removing the hose each time you cleaned.

I really did not have to adjust it much. I did modify my output to discharge into my baffels to help with micro bubbles. Here is a shot of it. the sump was a 80 gal.

the skimmer is 9.5" round. but with the pump I have its 9.5x16. Its prob to big for your area.
