what kind of wood to use

Hello everyone,
im planning to transfer my 30g from a dresser we put it on way long ago to a homemade stand. I know im using 2x4 lengths for the top/base and 4x4 in order to stand them up. im at concern about what wood to use. I know pine is a popular choice, but what do you think about redwood, is it too soft?

P.S. the stand will be 45" high, 31" length, and 18" depth, is this too high concerning the center of gravity for the tank?

I think you do not need to use 4x4 as a base or tops
2 x 4 are sturdy enough. you just make sure it braces well and is strong enough. Use some L bracket or t bracket to add strength afterwards. I use redwood but pine should be fine once you finish and have put a few coats of sealant on it.

I have my 120g on 2x4 with 3/4" ply as a base.

The dimensions are Length 49", Width 25", Height of 52" or so.

shoot my 300 gal is on 2x4 with 3/4" ply too. and thats custom made too. 4x4 are kinda over kill. 2 x 4 should be fine. just brace it.

Most 2x4s are Douglas Fir in these here parts (Southern Yellow Pine is more popular in the East Coast). It's plentiful and structurally stable, meaning it doesn't expand/contract much. That's why most houses use it now for framing.

I'm thinking "plain old 2x4s" will be Douglas Fir and will be fine for your stand. Besides, most of us jut go to the lumber store and pick out whatever is available in the cheapo 2x4 section without thought to wood type.

Now for the cosmetic skin of the stand/canopy .. I don't know. You would probably put a layer of urathane on it after you build it. And put it on both sides.

sand the sucker down so it's nice and smooth and stain it if you want a stian look then seal it up with some lacqure and you're set.

thanks for the advice guys. im getting all my ideas from building this from Ken at amazon pets. im helping him wit a coral tray stand and i guess im gaining experience in the handyman sense.
