What kind of zoa is this and do I get rid of it...

These are popping up all over my tank now and what started out as a 4 polyp frag has grown to crazy numbers and is just popping up everywhere. I even have a polyp growing on the back of a snail...I see it moving around the tank from time to time.

Its some sort of protopaly. They are pretty invasive so you might like to try and pull off some of the zoa mat and either trade it in for credit at an LFS or put it on frag plugs

I am getting ready to move the tank in preparation for my upgrade so when I do that I will cut as many of them off and then scrub the rock. It all started out as a freebie and now I know why they guy was giving them away.

i just had to completely redo my tank/rock and get rid of about 8-10 huge pieces of rock because of these things. Do something about them now, do not wait. I lost a lot of money and corals to those.

that sucks! most of the pieces don't have anything permanent on them so I can put them in a brute and cook them for a few weeks before reintroducing them to the tanks. There is one that has a huge colony of 2 different types of zoos on them so that will be more difficult to take care.

I thought Protopalys were not Zoanthids? And vice versa.

I've got some protopalythoa, and a small zoanthid frag plug in my DT now.

The general consensus is to get rid of both?

zoa's are not as bad, but I had to get rid of them too because the spread alot as well.

To me, the polyps were ugly, so I didnt mind getting rid of them.
With zoas, isolate them with an island or something or some rubble and just let them spread on that, since they have way more color and variety

I have the same palys they are easy to pull off the rocks though. My zoa's grow at half the rate these things grow. Only major bad thing about them is they really like to spread themselves out as they grow. They are all over my glass but once they move towards my zoa's are start pluking :headwalls:

Just pull them off and control their growth and you should be find.

Probably Protopalythoa sp.
No, no need chemicals.
Pull them off the rocks, yes.

If you still want to keep them, you can isolate them in a small rock and they should be fine. You can also transfer them from rock to rock using super glue and give to your friends. They release some slime though.

I have some on rocks with zoas and they just love each other. Go figure...

They love organics in the water and light.

Grandis.

Definitely pull of as much as you can as fast as you can. With the amount that you have they are probably putting out atleast a few new heads per day. This will get out of hand before you know it if you dont start pulling them soon.

im plsnning on doing some removal this weekend with rocks I can take out without affecting my entire aquascape. then get the rest when i move the tank in a few weeks. they are nice but definitely a nuissance.

Steve

u can take alot of rock rubble and surrond the colonys that way they cant spread but over the rubble and easy to frag by just pulling the rubble away.

i love zoas/palys/protopalys i let them grow wheereever they want to no tanks looks better than a zoa dominated tank
