What Macro lens for Canon Rebel XSi?

Owner of Canada Corals
I just picked up a new DSLR and I would like to start taking some good macro shots. The 18-55mm lens that was included with the cam is just not good enough.

What do you guys think of the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II macro lens?

It's really cheap but I am not sure how good it would be for taking pics of corals.

The 50 1.8 is a nice lens (I have its slightly nicer counterpart the 50 1.4), but it is not a macro lens.

For macro, I think the most highly recommended is the 100 f/2.8 macro followed by the 60 mm macro. There is another lens, the MPE-65, but I don't think that would serve you well at this point.

My Circuit City never was stocked well, but there are lots of people getting 100mm Macro's at unbelievable prices there right now. If your circuit city still has one there may be a good price there.

The working distance on the 50mm is going to be really short if you can get it to 1x magnification. You have to use extension tubes to get the magnification that high, though, as the lens won't get there on its own.

Here's a review: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/reviews/canon-ef-50mm-f-1.8-ii-lens-review.aspx

I don't even see this lens on the Canon site. Is it discontinued?

Anyway, xenon's recommendation of the 100 mm would probably serve you better. You really need the extra distance from lens to subject for in-tank macros because of the thickness of the glass and the fact that you don't want to have to move everything to take pictures of them.

Good luck!
