What pump for a 1200gph closed loop?

Hey guys,
I am planning a closed loop and wondering what you guys would suggest for a 1200gph closed loop. Of course the pump has to be external. I have read some stuff and some people are using the Ocean runners. I would like to balance budget, quiet, power consumption etc... Originally I thought the quiet one was the way to go but I have seen a lot of threads stating they are not restarting on their own and have become a little more noisier than people thought they would be.

Keep in mind, that I only need about 1200gph. The OR is 1700, but I am sure a little extra flow to a spray bar or something would be ok.

Also, does anyone have a used external pump they are trying to get rid of?

If you are going to use a spray bar, everything I have read says you want to use a pressure rated pump. I was considering going that route myself but have decided I don't want to mess with a spraybar.

Then maybe I will stay away from that method, it was just a thought.

If u are going to do a spray bar, ur going to need a lot more flow than that. In my 90 gal Im pushing 3600 gph and its a nice flow but theres no way I couldve used a spraybar and plumb as many outputs as I did. U need almost all of that 1200 gph just for a 4 foot spraybar to work properly

Yeah, I guess I will stay away from that for now...

why not just drill it and install a real pump. there are some nice quiet ones out there
Not really sure what you mean, I plan on drilling for an overflow into my sump, and figured while I was drilling I will go for a closed loop as well. My tank is only 38g so I think more flow than 1200-1700 would be overkill in my closed loop.

For my return i will be going much less, probably something like 500gph.

for the return 500 to 600 is good but u really cant have too much flow. All u need to do is make sure that the return portion of the closed loop isnt too small so u will have a nice easy flow

use a seio or a maxi jet mod on the closed loop. alot more energy efficiant(as long as you arnt moving water up or down ( as in from a sump to tank. ) it works best ( tank to floor to tank tho counts as 0 head. as long as its sealed btw)

I may have a Mag 12 available after this weekend. About 5 months old. Nothing wrong with it other than heat added to the tank. Going with an OR3500 instead. Will be delivered today and I will be replumbing tomorrow or Saturday. Let me know if you are interested.

Hey ATTR, I dont think those will work well with a closed loop, as they would need to be submersed and with a typical CL you would have an external pump.

I could be wrong though...

Hey LPS, i appreciate the heads up, I think if I go with a smaller pump, I will be going with the OR as well.

From what I've been reading it may be the better choice. Supposed to be quieter, only about half the wattage too and cheaper.

Don't want to dis the Mags. Have used a lot of them and they have never failed me. Just time to upgrade. I think I have a 5 and a 9.5 laying around as well.

Armando,

Here's a picture of my Closed Loop. It's an old pic and the intake for the CL isn't in the Overflow any longer as it caused to many problems put you get the idea. In the middle is an OM Squirt 2-Way by Oceans Motions. No where near as nice as your setup  but it does the job. :D
