what return pump for a 180 gallon?

how is your skimmer setup? I am planning on having a skimmer that will be fed from the overflow so I am assuming it needs to be semi good flow coming down the return?

what the verdict? lol. sorry to pester but I am working on my build.
I ordered my skimmer.. Octopus Extreme 250 so now I just need a return pump...
I was thinking of the eheim 1262 ( hella expensive) but i dont know if it will be enough .. also I am hoping to use a SCWD (unless yall dont recommend)

so... dual returns with a SCWD.... mag 12?? or stick with the eheim?
 
the least efficent method to get flow from a tank is by using a large return pump.
#1 is powerhead by far
#2 is closed loop
#3 Return pump

Get the smallest return pump that feeds directly to your skimmer. on my 225 i would use a Seq snapper and on my 560/g I used a dart and then get the rest of your flow from powerheads and CL's.
 
my only concern would be if the overflows drain more water than the return pump could handle. i agree you dont want a ton of flow thru the sump but i thought youd want to turn the tank over more than 4 times an hour?
 
nyvp and biecacka, not really sure where yall got that I wanted to max out the flow, just wanted something sufficient.. I do NOT want to try to max out the overflows
I simply want something for decent flow through the sump and was wondering if I needed a little more "oomph" to run a SCWD?

a mag12 uses 110watts
and a mag 18 uses 145 according to marinedepot...

seems like yours is high on power consumption for the extra 200gph over mag18.. just wondering how you came to that particular choice?
 
never said you wanted to max them out just was making a point and trying to see what most ppl recommend for tank turnover thru the sump. as this in theory will allow for better skimming

i tried them both and didnt like them.... this is super quiet and pushes water pretty good too! ... as far as watts go im not as concerned because other then the lighting, its all pretty low.... i was just looking for somthing powerful and quiet and this gets it done pretty good!.. ill post a build thread once its got livestock in it because i like pictures!:D
 
Eheim, you don't want a ton of flow thru the sump b/c of noise/bubbles. Use additional pumps/closed loop/etc in the display for the majority of your flow.

If you want max skimming efficiency, plumb the overflow directly to the skimmer (with a T).
 
The actual flow to the sump will not effect skimming much, whether you have a sump turn over rate of 200 gph or 1,000 gph, your skimmer will not be able to 100% clean the water going to it. In some ways, lower flow through the skimmer is better... i.e. recirculating skimmers. The idea off feeding the skimmer off the overflow is that only tank water and not a mix of tank/just skimmed water will be in the skimmer. This further negates the effect of sump turn over rate... At least this is my experience.
 
agreed dr. i have just always heard it can be hard to keep water levels in skimmer consistant if you feed it from an overflow. however this is just hearsay as i have NO experience with it. i was mearly saying if you have an in sump skimmer you want to get the water from your DT to the sump as often as possible so you can skim it better because as you said this method will never result in 100% water skim
 
well I have an Octopus Extreme 250 so there will be no plumbing to the physical skimmer involved.........

I will plumb one overflow into the skimmer chamber and T the other overflow, half flow to the skimmer and the other half to the refugium or as I feel needed
 
I just stumbled onto Quietone 4000 pumps and think I may be getting that instead of the eheim

a little more waterflow for less money and uses less electricity..

anyone have any experience with this pump?
 
I use the 6000 for my 180 and I am ordering the 3000 for my 120 I am getting ready to set up. I am happy so far.
