What salt do you use?

Instant Ocean for 4 years, just switched to Reef Crystals. The IO = very high alk but low calcium. I seriously can't complain about it but I decided to go to reef crystals for the extra trace elements which in a newly mixed batch were decent. Alk was average, between 8-9 much lower than IO but calc. was 450, much higer than IO. Iodide and Iodine contents were right on the money. Mg was a little low at 1100. Strontium was a little low at 4 but the error in the salifert test is +/- 5 ppm so who really knows. I supplement Mg and strontium anyway.

I bought a 5 gallon bucket of the reef crystals from the LFS because by the time you pay extra shipping, you may as well just buy it and take it home. It'll last me a year. It was 64 bucks with tax. Probably too much. The place is usually a rip off.

Kent Salt Mixes, so far no problems.
I pick up locally from Marine Depot. ; $7.49 for a 50 gallon mix...can't beat that! ( I think if its shipped its $11 more)

Tried 50% Instant Ocean and 50% Oceanic but my tank needs all the extra calcium it can get so now I am using 100% Oceanic. I tried to get the large buckets from Petsmart but they said they could not carry it unfortunately. They can get it but it would not be the on-line price savings. It would be the on-line price plus shipping charge. I have had hair algae appear and go away on its own, 3rd occasion presently. Tank is only 5 months old though. The green hair showed up again this week. It should be gone in a few more days like it has before, hopefully. I turned off half the lighting just for a little extra help today. I attribute the outbreak to the new tank, not the salt. The first and 2nd outbreak lasted less than 2 weeks and all have been on different areas of the tank. The first was while nitrates were still high in the 20-50 range while running a phosban reactor. The nitrates are now zero but I have turned off the phosban reactor to see how it goes without it. Sorry for the side track but some people are associating Oceanic with Hair Algae problems so I thought it was relevant.

160 gal bucket of IO at Petsmart.com is 31.99... print the page out and take it in to the store and they will honor the price. If you're dripping kalk, good salt, no worries, unbeatable price!
