I am looking to upgrade my filtering system for my 55 gallon. I want to get some low profile equipment. I would like to have a protein skimmer and refugium. I would like to know what are the quietest and best brands. I would also like to know if there are any other types of filtration out there that would be great to have.

Hang on the back skimmer rated for at least a 100 gallons

If limited to hob equipment, a skimmer rated over 100 gallons would be best. They sell some hob refugiums or you can turn a aquaclear into one.

Tunze makes an in tank skimmer and a skimmer plus mechanical filtration. Both are made of black acrylic so they kind of blend in, looking like a rectangular overflow box.

Reef Octopus BH-1000 would be good for that tank. I run a 2000 and it's great. pump is on the outside under the skimmer. I don't think there is any such thing as a quite hob skimmer. mine sounds loud but I can't hear it with the tv on. it may bother you if it's in a bedroom however.
