What should be the water cycle in a large reef aquarium? how many tank volumes per hour?

Or you could be me - at 30x 
I now rely on my return pump for tank flow. There used to be an oceans motions closed loop for that, but I got tired of maintaining it and the over-the-top returns for it. Tank is too small to see ugly powerheads. Considered Gyre pumps, still ugly.
@Bigdelfin As ned said - there are a lot of variables. What size tank and what size sump and what are you putting in the sump?
