What size Koralia for 15 gallon tank?

Hi y'all,

I am looking for a new pump for my 15 gallon tank. It is going to be primarily a softies tank. I would like to try something like a Koralia pump, but I hear conflicting opinions on the flow of Koralia powerheads.

Does anyone have a recommendation as to what size Koralia or what powerhead I should try for my 15 gallon tank?

Tomoko -

I wouldn't use the Korallia Nano powerheads at all, at least not the ones that secure with a suction cup only. Not only do they not stick to the glass well, but the red plastic part that holds the powerhead to the suction cup doesn't last long, either. If you are bound and determined to get a Korallia and are not going to be using a wavemaker, then I'd get the smallest Korallia that uses a magnet holder - I think it's the Korallia 2.

If you are going to use a wavemaker, or are open to other ideas, I'd get one of the new maxi-jet boxings that has the circulation pump kit and a magnet holder for it.

I have had really bad luck with the Korallias, especially since they switched over to the Evolution models. They say they are designed for wavemakers, but they don't last three months.

Thanks, Will. I appreciate your input very much. I am going to look into other options.

Another pump that I was looking at is Eheim's Aquaball simply because I like Eheim's reliability (I own a few Eheim equipment.) However, I don't know anything about the powerhead.

I also looked at Maxi-Jet Pro's. I like the low wattage on these new maxi-jets. Are they the ones you are recommending? I did not find the ones called boxings.

I don't know about the evolution pumps at all Tomoko, but I have had good luck with the larger Koralia's. Mine have the magnet/suction combo. They no longer offer the 2 Koralia's that I know of, now they are named by the rated "maximum" flow. It's good to know that the evolutions aren't working, but they sure were and economical flow source before this :(.

Thank you, PaPa Johnny.

I've also been very happy with my Koralia 4's, but I have no experience with nano or evolution pumps.

I have seen some comments on Maxi-jet pro being loud. If that is true, I need to look for something else.

I like the idea of the wide gentle flow such as Koralia and MJ pro, but I may have to opt for a standard type.

Yes, sorry - I meant the new packaging. They are in a black box that also includes the squirrel cage-type impeller assembly for circulation pump in addition to the standard impeller and 1/2 inch outlet.

I'm not exactly sure which one it is..my buddy just gave me the 28 cube about a month ago and it came with it but its a nice little power head...i can try to find out..I was at pet supplies plus the other day by my house and they had one just like it....its a little bitty thing but looks just like my big ones....
