what size return pump???

I would say about 3x turnover. I like running mine on the slower end so that water has more contact time in the sump. I also depend on my powerheads to most of my flow in tank.

Contact time in the sump itself isnt the focus...whats it's making contact with should be your focus and the amount of turnover through that filtration system itself that needs to be the focus of your sump....6-10 times per hour and you should have a skimmer that should be rated to handle this volume per hour .....think of it like this if you have no fuge and no cheto or deep sandbeds or macros in the sump natural removers your skimmer is then just processing parts of the same water over and over and then imagin if its under rated....not going to be to effective...

Whatever you do I'd go with a bigger rated pump and gate it down to whatever your needs are. If later on you want to add stuff or need more flow bc of whatever reason all you have to do is turn the valve just a bit. Much simpler than having to add pumps or replacing pump. Just my .02$

Pump recommendations? I have a 30g sump. Thanks for yalls help!

Is it a 30 breeder? The dimensions of the sump and the chambers inside are very important because you don't want it overflowing during a power loss. A 30 breeder turned into a sump is pushing it on a 180g display, in my opinion.
