What size tank do I have???

Hello everyone;

I need some help determining the size of a used aquarium that I have purchased.

The original owner states that he bought it from Glass Cages, and that it is a 240 gallon. The tag inside says it was manufactured in 1998.

It's dimensions are 72 x 24 x 30. By the chart on the Glass Cages site, this should be a smaller tank than a 240, possibly a 210 although a 210 isn't listed on the chart. A 240 tall is listed as being 72 x 24 x 31. When I plug in it's size here on the Reef Central calculator, I get something in the ballpark of a 225 gallon.

I am also wondering if he isn't thinking Glass Cages by mistake and it's actually an All-Glass, although I can't find a brand name anywhere (but I don't have the tank in my house yet.) All-Glass doesn't have that size on their site either. I have e-mailed both companies but have yet to hear back from them. Would the manufacturer and glass thickness have that big of an effect on the internal volume of the tank?

Did Glass Cages possibly use a different thickness of glass eight years ago?

I don't care what size it actually is, it's big enough to keep me happy for now. I do want to be accurate when I say what size reef I keep though. :)

Thanks!

:( No, don't have a pic yet. I am gathering all of the equipment prior to having the tank delivered because the reef store owner is being my best buddy right now and assisting me with plumbing. This is my first time plumbing anything so I wanted some help. :D

By your description, it sounds like an All-Glass. I haven't noticed any extra pieces of glass anywhere, and there are two plastic center braces that are molded from the same piece of plastic that runs around the edge of the aquarium. It looks very much like the first photo in the thread that you posted except that it's brown plastic to match the oak tone trim.

Great thread link by the way. I am working on hole placement right now, so that link will help me there too!

A "quicky" estimate is to multiply the cubic feet of the tank by 7.76 to get the gallons...
72" = 6'
24" = 2'
30" = 2.5'

So: 6 x 2 x 2.5 x 7.76 = 232.8 Gallons.

Actual tanks are smaller because most people measure the outside of the glass, not the inside, so the actual volume goes down by how thick the glass is. You never fill it completely to the rim either, unless you have one of those few tanks that spill over the sides and have the water collected that way.

Do you know if the manufacturers sell tanks based on inside or outside dimensions?

Thank you for your help, BTW.

72 x 24 x 30 divided by 231 = 224.42 and if the glass is 1/2 thick inside would be 71 x 23 x 29 divided by 231 =205.01

If it is an all-glass 210, the dimensions are 72X24X29 and to measure internal volume you need only take 1/2" off on the height so: (71 X 23 X 28.5)/12/12/12 X 7.76 = 209.00
