What size would you go with?

I have a 90 Gallon Reef ready I am setting up, I am going to build my own sump. Debating what size of aquarium to build the actual sump out of. was thinking a 55, but not sure if I would be better off with a 40 breeder or 29..??

True more total volume is usually best. But with that said you may want to save some space under the stand for new improved ideas once you get going. A 20 gives plenty of room for pump box - 2 baffles and an return area large enough for big skimmer and a couple of reactors. A breeder 40 is better of course but also a bigger footprint under the tank. Really depends on what you want in the sump.. All mechanical sumps can have smaller footprints. Larger sumps are usually dedicated to sand, rock, mud, macros, refugiums, etc...

I would like an Auto Top off somewhere under there, I was also thinking of a refugium (I've been out of the hobby for awhile, had a 120 about a year or so ago but it ended up being knocked over while in storage) So I've never dealt with a refugium before, but would like to give one a shot.

I just finished baffling a 40 breeder for my 90G. This seems like a very common option. Are you planning on putting this under the stand? If so, the 40 breeder is pretty tall in a standard stand leaving a limited amount of room for service. I actually ended up tossing the stand that came with my tank and building a new one that was about 8 inches taller so it was more comfortable to work under.

Also, if you're putting it in the stand, a 55 may not fit and would be a PITA to get in or out with a standard 4' stand.

the stand is fairly tall, so I don't believe it would be an issue. I was thinking a 40 breeder because of the larger foot print. I'll have to look up the measurements of a 40 breeder and see how much room it would take up under the stand
