what skimmer to buy?

are you looking for an in-sump, recirculating, or hang on the back? i am a big fan of reef octopus, well priced and work great. for my 90 i am running the nw150, if you have the room you could do the 200. mine did good out of the box and i then did the mesh mod and venturi mod and it is one skimming machine.
 
If you go octo get a new one, the extreme octo 160 from marinesolutionsinc.com they have a sicce pump that will push around 45-50scfh. Which is 4x's the octo 200 stock.
 
ughh ASM is not the best choice. luke33 is steering you the right way. He's the king of budget skimmers that kick like Bruce Lee!
 
ok I am surfing marine depot right know I will see if they have it ,I am all for save $ so I can put somewere else in the tank.
 
Do you want whatever comes in on the rock to live in your tank or do you want only the things you put in the tank on your rock? The natural approach can yield cool results sometimes from a diverstity of life standpoint but can also introduce serious pests and cause other problems such as algae growth. If you just want the things you put in then I suggest buying the structure you like best, cooking the rock and going from there.
 
In noblesville above Indy. Like sherm said, there's pro's and con's to both. If you do want to get the diversity i'd suggest half live and half base and just sand, no live sand as its a complete waste imo as your rock will seed it in less than a month.
 
I think I would rather go with the more natural approach even with the understanding that some problems may occur. It boils somewhat down to the fact that I can pay $3.50-$4.00lb. on the internet or $8.00lb locally. When you are purchasing 80-100lbs of rock that adds up to hundreds of dollars in rock alone.
 
Round indy i can get lr pretty steadily at 2bux a lb. Look for your local reefers selling there stuff, its the best deal around. From Eville, been to louisville many a times.
 
Yes, I was planning on buying bags of just sand 3 inches deep and buy 80lbs. of either cured or uncured live rock. If it is uncured I was planning on going through the process to cure it.
 
If I were to buy uncured rock I know I would need to get the aquarium up and going with salt water, pumps, lighting, and skimmer. If the rock is uncured I was told to get a rubbermaid garbage can and rinse the uncured rock in salt water to get any old dead algae off of it and then put it into the aquarium and keep the lights off for approx. 2 weeks while the skimmer and the pumps work.
 
Well I think that is a matter of opinion. I'd throw the uncured rock in my tank to cycle it and keep lights on it for 8hrs a day. You never know whats on uncured rock, zoa's, polyps, lps, anem's, all kinds of good(and bad) stuff. Just get a skimmer hooked up to it and watch it break in with some nasty skimmate.
 
Would you know anyone I could contact to get lr? As I said before I would be looking for 80-100lbs. I prefer the rock that looks more purple or reddish in color. The aquarium shops around here seem to be pretty steep in what they want for lr.
 
IMO if you go with "uncured rock" then let it go in your tank as soon as possible. Chances are doing a limited "cure" cycle will only kill the things you would deem as beneficial. Cook it all the way or not at all. Me personally, I prefer to cook the buh jeez itzz out of it and add only what I want in my tank and I'm BB all the way.
