what skimmer would you reccomend for around 500 gal

I saw that Saltwater Paradise has a used Aquamedic Turbofloater 5000 for sale if you're not limited on space. I'm not sure what they're asking but I think it's rated for something like 1000 gallons.

He had it on a manifold system with a reeflo hammerhead the hammerhead ran his whole tank. So it Wasn't that expensive , and reeflos are quiet.

I will pm you his info

until the seal leaks every 5-6 month and have to get replaced constantly

the only issue ill have with what i have is its internal and the only place its gonna fit is the return section of the sump where the water is going to fluctuate. i am going to go with a dsb with all new sand.

Does anyone use a DSB anymore? I think they've been replaced with more effective methods of filtration. Same thing with miracle mud, things of the past..

a deep sand bed is still good some things wont change just the price people want to spend on setting stuff up.

I have sand bed , I tried the whole BB for 2-3 years and had no luck (not that it wont work just didn't for me) so I switched it up

Zero nitrates since putting in my DSB. acropora colors are intense too. Old or not, it's one of the easiest methods of denitrification known for reef tanks.

I have been running a DSB for 10 years with no issues at all. approx. 4'x2'x7"
If I remember correctly it was about 350-400 lbs of southdown playsand.

Ive never tried one so I cant speak on experience I just thought there mightve been a more efficient way to do it,but what do I know Ive had No3 for years so dont listen to me!

I don't know how much you are wanting but you can catch it on sale at inland aquatics sometimes for .50 a pound, it is a fine grain sand.

This is where I bought mine. $109 for 160 pounds of Araganite from Marco Rocks. The price includes shipping. I got 320 pounds. I want to do a deep sand bed and if my calculations are correct, that should give me somewhere around 4 inches on my 6' by 2' 180 gallon. I may then seed the dry sand with a few bags of Oceans Direct live sand if I want to make it a bit deeper.

I'm also planning on putting in a deep sand bed in my stand alone refugium that will be part of the sump down in the basement. I really like the idea of a DSB not only for creating the anaerobic environment needed for denitrifying bacteria, but there are a lot of other cool critters that will live in that deep sand who will help keep the tank healthy.
