In the frag tanks themselves, I'm running bare-bottom. In one of the 30gal fuges, I have a shallow sand bed slowly building up a DSB (the system isnt running yet :p) and in the other 30gal fuge it will be barebottom with lots of live rock, and lots of flow.

I voted Bare-Bottom, but I do use containers of crushed coral to allow shrooms, rics, and leathers to attach before being transplanted..

me too, rubble and 1/4" sand

For my softies/brain/bubble/mushroom coral tub - I have a DSB.

If I had fish or any real bioload in there, I might go with BB - but without much bioload or anything beyond coral-target-feeding ... nutrient issues are pretty minimal.

Mines packed but it's hooked up to the main tank with the common sump and hardware.
It has about 1.5" of the same substrate as the main and there is virualy no floor space left. It's a 30 breeder.

I go BB but have a DSB and lots of LR in the sump and fuge BB in the frag tank itself gives very few places for unwanted pests to hide.

I'm setting up a 20long for growing out zoos and maybe a couple sps... Keep in mind that this tank is it's own system with a couple powerheads... I wasn't gonna put more than a couple pieces of l/r in there and just enough sand to cover the bottom.....No fish... Maybe a couple crabs and a couple snails..... I've even though of running an aqua clear on it with a sponge and carbon.... Does this sound like a good idea or not? I'm looking for opinions... Thanks in advance.....

I do crushed coral. I grow mainly softies, many mushrooms. In crushed coral if I remove one from a rock or if one fly's off or a runner is thrown, the mushrooms can just land on the substrate and attach to the CC, then I can glue that mushroom to a rock to sell. It's just the lazyist way to do it IME. I'm all about easy.

For the guys who go bb, you must still have some type of CaCO3 substrate for buffering, right? I'd expect you would see a lot of pH swings without it. I like SSB in display tank and DSB in sump so I've got plenty of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to complete the cycle.
