What the heck is this???

I took a trip this weekend to Sanibel Island. Was beautiful. I saw these crazy things on washed up on the beach. Have no clue as to what they are. wondering if anyone had a clue. Also there were thousands of urchins washed up dead. The shells very cool. Heres a pic.

Was it hard like bone or cartilage? How long was it?

I have not clue but I lived on Sanibel island for 4 years and plenty of things washed up on the shore because of red tide.

It felt like it might have been some sort of coral. and there was hundreds all up and down the beach. They seemed to have some sort of spiral shape to them.

They're egg casings I believe. Not sure what though.

well thats the best guess I have so far. They did have a cartiledge type feel to them. hmmm.

correct it is a egg case,
it belongs to the whelk, a large snail
