What to feed my clam??

I've been told my maxima and dersa clams get 90% of what they need from the light and the other 10% from filter feeding. Is this correct? And what should I be feeding them direct? I have used oyster feast before but recently I called a lfs and when I told them what I wanted the oyster feast for they said I should use phytoplankton for clams.
I'm confused and would appreciate any input on this matter.
Thanks

I do not have a clam nor do I have any experience but a quick google search states that feeding clams in unnecessary unless the clam is very small. Approx 2" or so.

Hopefully someone with experience will chime in.

Clam have a plant base diet , musty do to photosynthesis. Keep a good flow and clean water. Ca+ helps the shell. Quick 2 cents of info.

I havent had a clam in a long time cause of the fish i tend to keep, but i dont recall feeding them anything but light.

Thank you all for the information, I really appreciate it :)
I did pick up some oyster feast for the whole tank in general so I guess that and plenty of light will do.
Thanks again

My maxima was about 3" when I got it a few years ago. I have never fed it anything and only provided the clam with a strong source of light. It is now about 8-9" across. You should probably put a small rock in the sand under each of your clams. As I understand it, maxima's prefer to attach themselves to a solid object. Once mine was attached, I moved it up in my rock work so it could get more light.

Im almost sure ive heard that technique also helps keep away those crazy snails that attack clams. I think they are called pyramid snails, they attack from the bottom.
