i have a new derasa in my 5.5 gallon. it's a tiny little thing, probably no more than 1.5" long at best. i was looking at zoomax & chromax. which is better? is either a good choice?

live food in the 4nm. to 40nm. range is the best AKA live phyto
any idea where to get live phyto and what exactly it would be called? are the 2 i mentioned live phyto? i don't think so from the description on the back of the bottles but i could be wrong.

DT's ,Phyto Feast, there are a few others. if it not kept in the fridge at your LFS the most likly its not live

IMO, with a clam that small, you'll want to feed it outside the tank. Place in a container of tank water and pour a bit of phyto in with it, and let sit for a few minutes. This will ensure that your clam is getting phyto, and not just your skimmer

great thanks everyone. was at the lfs again last night & was recommended dt's live which is in his refrigerator. until i get paid on tuesday (lol this hobby is expensive! :p ) can i feed it kent's microvert? and i will feed outside the tank as you suggested, larry.

for now you can, i dont know how much it will use tho. and i think your tank is a 5g right? if so i wouldnt mess with thaking it out.

Stay away from them Kent products that you mentioned, they're junk.
They were tested in a lab and there were only two live organisms in each bottle and didn't know if they were good or bad.
Also, you can't keep any kind of phyto alive in a store. So think about that stuff before you buy any guru juice from your lfs.
If i were you go on to that famous auction site and punch in phytoplankto and you'll find a couple places selling it pretty cheap.
My suggestion would be to culture your own from some that you buy off the internet, you can't use DT's because there is more then one strain in it. But read about it first, I believe flame angel from this board has simple and great instructions to follow.

What do you feed the fish in the tank? If you feed frozen food, you could probly get away with not feeding your clam at all. I have had my Dersa for about 3 months and havnt fed it once, and it looks great. It even grew. I can risk feeding it because it would be adding unwated nutrients which Im trying to get rid of at the moment. My tank is a seahorse tank so I have to feed frozen any way.

there are no fish in the tank. i had a goby but the darn thing jumped. so i decided to make it a fishless tank. i fed it dts last night and it seemed to like it.
