What type of Oxypora frag?

Just picked up a frag at my lfs which was titled Orange Oxypora.
Does anyone know the full scientific name and is it really an Oxypora?
All opinions and care notes welcomed.

Thanks.

Looks like an Echinophyllia lamellosa to me, but it is small and hard to tell. Most echinophyllia (and oxypora for that matter) species will do well in a range of conditions, seems like moderate light and flow are preferred. If you want to try it under high light acclimate it very slowly for best results.

Nice looking piece by the way :)

p.s. not sure if you already know but you have a local reef club with a lot of cool folks in your area: www.cvreefers.org

I personally have never seen a Oxypora that colorful. Does not mean they dont exist.

Most often we see Oxypora Lacera or Glabra imported.

Your photo seems very blue, is it shot only in actinic light ? Can you shoot one under daylight and from another angle?

Oxypora are sometimes lumped in with several other genus ( enchinophyllia and Mycedium ) and referred to in the trade as chalice corals.

Thanks for the info guys. Yes it's under Actinic lighting (daylight had already cycled off when I took the pic). I'll take a normal shot and post it. I'm inexperienced with Chalice corals and have noticed many different names for them so that's why I'm posting to see if I really have what was listed at my LFS.

I agree, still to small to tell, but does indeed look like an echinophyllia, especially the color combo makes it more than likely as well IMO, opposed to a oxypora or mycedium which usually arent as colorfull.

I couldn't really get any other angles w/o distorting the picture. Hope this helps better define what I've got. And thanks for the info on the CVReefers group, probably a tad too far from the south bay though.

What ever it is, its gonna grow up to be a sweet surprise :) Very healthy and great coloration it'd be even better if you dont forget to update this thread with a new pic in a month or two ;)

I like it better w/o the actinics!! Coral just glows. I agree with Justin, we need to see it grow. Probably an echino and they usually get better with age. Sweet.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm looking forward to see what it grows into!
I do hope it's not a artificially colored piece since it wasn't really expensive... ~$29, and there was a redder one that was ten bucks more making this one seem like the low end frag.

If you are talking about the coral being dyed I don't think they do that anymore. It never was a very common practice and there isn't really much reason to do that. Corals are so colorfull on their own that the dealers don't need to. It's mostly freshwater fish that get colored. I can guarantee your Echinophyllia is not dyed or "juiced".

Just giving an update of the piece, it's really started growing vertically now.
Since I lost the first pic, I'll repost a similar one and then add the latest one.

I'm really digging this coral and am glad I picked up a frag.

Very nice color to that piece...it even looks like it may develop some gray or white around the coralies.
