Before Hurricane Katrina, I had a toadstool leather that looked similar to a Sacrophyton spp. in form, however the polyps pulsed like a xenia. I would like to get another one like it. Do any of you have any ideas what it was? Thanks.
It could have been pom pom xenia. Under certain conditions it can grow a thick stalk and have short polyps making it appear like a toadstool.
The only pulsing corals i have heard of are Xenia sp. and a very rare Sinularia sp.
This was definately a toadstool. The stalk was about 3 inches in diameter and the top was maybe 4 inches across. The polyps were about the size of those on my ORA green sacro. The polyps opened and closed (pulsed) at a slower rate than xenia. It was a brown color with white polyps. After it died it left some shinny sclerites behind. It came attached to the root system of some type of sea grass.
