What wattage

This is for a friend who doesn't belive me
what wattage MH unit would you use for a 72x18x36 deep tank

I know a guy who runs 1000watt bulbs over his deep tank. Might be able to get away with 400watt depending on coral type and aquascape depth.

I would go with 400w MH's for a tank that deep.

3X250 MH (everything that needs light needs to be < 18" deep

Probably around 500W T5 would be the same.

3X400, you can do just about what ever you want.(800W T5)

I would tell your friend to get online and look it up. If he's going to make a mistake from shear stubborness, let him make it on his own. But for the record, 400w MH's should do the trick. 2 or 3 I'd imagine.

It depends on what you want. If you want a SPS stocked tank, then 400w would be great and might be over powered. 250w would be just fine for a general reef tank.
