What would you do with this tank??

Not my tank, but a posibility in the future, :)

i was thinking about perhaps something like this:

1) raised sand bed>live rock shelf>open sand bed
1A) Mangroves on the raised sand bed

2) live rock island>open sand bed

3) live rock bay>open sand bed (U-shaped)

4) live rock towers>live rock bridge (lost of swiming space)

5) scattered live rock piles>open sand bed (outcrops)

6) live rock island with major cave system>open sand bed

any and all suggestions welcomed!

thank you.

I don't think how to aquascape would be the real problem...how to handle the maintenance and other issues with that depth is the proplem IMO. After all that is dialed just add a ton or two of live rock and your ready to go.

Dave

Personally I would fill it up with live rock and fish and coral and then snorkel in it.... Oh and hopefully you have access to sunlight or can put in some solatubes or something because lighting a tank that size is going to cost A LOT.

Yep, that is a tremendous tank. I don't see how you would light a reef tank that deep, even with 1000w halides. You would probably need a couple of tons of rock to cover that much area. I would just do a FOWLR setup. Maintenance would be a nightmare.

Not to be negative again but after reading your hobby experience...

"2.5+ years FW, 6+ months of severly intense SW research
Current Tanks: 10 g. FW planted"

I'd stay away from a tank of this size unless you have lots of time and lots of money, if you have both those and the skills to put it all together...go for it. It'll be a interesting thread.

Dave

...my recommendation...look at it and laugh...and be glad you don't have to pay the monthly bills it will take to adequately support it...

One 1x1" acro frag and see how long it takes to fill 'er up. :)

Actually I would probably do large pillars with connecting bridges and a couple large schools of fish, ie 100+ chromis, 20 yellow tangs, etc.

the point here is not to see how much i know about SW and reefing, thats the reason why i came here.
what i really would like to see, is how creative peole can get w/ a large expanse so that i can learn some interesting aquascaping ideas.

btw, thank you, JPA.

Does anyone have some photos of their "steve tyree methods"?

thank you.

Put a snake in it and be done with it.
A reef this size is gonna cost you more money than most people can afford.
The light bill alone is enough to deter the average reefer. Simple economics is the limiting factor for most large tanks. Take into account the equipment costs alone gives me the hives just thinking about it. Make a cool terrarium though.
You could go FW or maybe farm Hamsters in there. Good luck.

a FOWLR would be the only way you could afford it, unless you are very very rich.

you could have a pretty cool fish tank though. school of tangs and chromis. a huge put 9 inches of sand on the bottom and have a heard of Yellow headed jawfish.

that or go the other way and have some BIG predators. full sized groupers some big big bugs and morays. having a 20# black grouper as a pet would be pretty cool.

FYI i'm going to clean a somebody's tank that is 12' by 8' by 6' all reef. and yes they are very rich. If they let me I'll take pictures and post them. :)

thank you very much, lordhelmet, that would be much appreciated.

the grouper idea is actually tied in, and you can pm if you'd like details, but i'd ratehr not discuss plans on RC just yet.

thanks.

If I had a 3500 gallon budget I wouldn't make a 6ft deep tank- that would be a nightmare to clean and maintain. Instead it could be something like 14x14x3.5 and aquascape it something like the Steve Weast and his Oregon Reef. Or if you really want that depth check out Bill's (now closed) thread. I hope you have 50-100k to drop into this baby cause it's going to be expensive. I've always wanted a large tank but 3500 gallons is HUGE- I'll be buying a 7x5x3 for 785 gallons (or similar) when my ship comes in.

Bill's thread looks amazing, and i think i recall reading it before, without knowing its importance, so let me say one thing.

Why must a community that relies entirely on the input (information, experience) of its members constantly seek to alienate them?

ITS the equivilant of RC shooting its own foot.

Anyway, could you possibly direct me to where I can access the pictures contained inside of that thread?

Thank you,

For the most part, assume that the lighting is a non-issue.

Biggest cost would be?

Thank you,

Everything. Electrical alone would be a $1000 a month.

Aquascaping? - One must determine the logisitcs of:

1. Obtaining adequate amounts of live rock and base rock. You're going to have to work directly with an importer to bring in that much live rock. I don't think marcorocks has enough dry rock to get it started.

2. Delivering the rock will require a semi with a hydraulic lift and a forklift to move it aorund. Hopefully you can scuba because aquascaping will be VERY hard without scuba gear.

:D

I'd rent a back hoe dig a big hole and drop the tank in it. I'd turn it into a kick butt koi pond.

The rock would be a non issue (except for the $10k you'd drop on it). You could easily get 1200-1500#s at a time in a normal pickup. 2 or 3 weeks in a row and you'd be done.

Ya the bills would be crazy.

I would make a sloping type layout with sand only a few inches fron teh top on one side with mangroves and such sloping down to the lower light corals at the other end.
