What would you stock a 120 with?

Curious to see what options or opinions would be on this. The tank will be the standard 48"x24" 120. Will be mostly LPS and softies. The only catch is the Stocking list must be centered around or include a 3" Black Tang.

Just curious what others think, I have had a ton of different fish over the years, some I kept others I traded or sold. I guess I'm looking for something different to pop up.

Some of my favourite fish...
- dwarf angels (gorgeous, constantly darting in and out of rockwork)
- clown gobies (HUGE personality in a tiny fish)
- longnosed hawkfish (eats pods but won't harm ornamental shrimp like other hawks)
- genicanthus angels (pick a species, any species, they're all fantastic and stay out in the open a lot)
- pistol shrimp/goby pair
- clownfish (I love maroons, but chose ocellaris for my 150 because they're more easygoing)
- wrasses

I'd suggest mixing up fish that stay in open water, hide in the rockwork, perch/host, live at different levels of the tank... and colours. I try to prevent competition for space, food, etc. and provide the most visual interest by avoiding similar looks or behaviour.

Have fun!

I have a purple tang, a flame angel, a clown goby, 2 pair of false clown, a six lines wrasse, a watchmen goby, 2 glass cardinal, 7 chromis and a long nose butterfly in my 120 mix tank.

LYN butterfly fish are great fish; often overlooked. and seldom come up on our forum. (All my drivel on this post makes up for that). I'm guessing its because they look so fragile. They are not wussy and one of the easier butterfly fish. They are usually listed as a "with caution" reef fish; but IME, and many posts on RC, I think they are fine in a reef the vast majority of the time.

This is one fish that shouldn't be acquired in the "small" size. Very small ones are so thin that even PFs and QT filter intakes can harm even a healthy one. If you do everything possible to get him eating and fattened up in the QT, they acclimate to the DT quite easily. Like many BF fish; most tankmates leave them alone. Like all fish, I would avoid a LYN from Indonesia; they are commonly available from Hawaii (#1 choice, always), The Maldives, etc. Visitors always seem to love this fish; it just looks like a reef fish.
