For some reason I had the same issues as well. I thought it was a fish nipping on them and keeping them closed then the algae formed. I moved my zoas to my other tank and now they are doing great. Hopefully some has a explanation but i changed to many things in my tank to pinpoint the exact cause
Try gently using a soft toothbrush to brush the algae off. IME, higher flow tends to discourage algae formation on polyps. Not a cure, but it can help.
I have tryed that and it wont come off.I added 2 powerheads 2 weeks ago to get more flow when they first started to show signs of the algae. So with only a 5.5g tank with a 1.5g fuge I have a total of around 400gph flowing in the tank.I am running a whisper 30-60 empty and one return for the fuge at 60gph also 2 60gph pumps in the tank.I am stumped I have no algae anywhere in the tank other then on the zoas and the sideglass.
