Well Im noticing tons of people wanting to know everything they need for a new tank. I know when I got my first fish tank my first post said something like "I need to know everything I need for my new tank and the brand names". So I thought to help people out we could write a list of things people may need. I have started the list but please help contrubute by writing more to the list and adding some brand names. I hope this will help all the new to the hobby people.

That's a good thought, Puffer.
I'd add: know what you want to keep, so your tank size and lights and ambitions all match up. And consider your tank shape: corner stands are great for apartments, but cost more and limit how much space you have for sump and machinery under the stand.
Sump, maybe, depending on needs. If sump, then return pump, and cross powerhead off list. Sump also needs a durso or similar device for the overflow. Get a reefready tank or be prepared to drill one if you want a fullsized sump. With that may go a skimmer, which goes into the sump, or hangs on the back of the tank. Again---whether or not reef-ready.
Refugium, ditto, depending on needs and space.
Test kits appropriate for fish, or for corals, depending.
