What your temp?

Mine varies between 25 & 27 celcius (77 to 80).

Is the varying temps between day & night bad for coral? (sps particularly)

No. Not those changes

One is 77, three at 80, and one is 85.

What's strange is that everything seems to do best in the tank that runs warm. I am not sure all the hysteria about setting up fans and chillers to get your tank from 82 down to 80 is really necessary. Most reefs vary in temperature and do get warmer then 80 degrees.

This is often the case, as metablic rates of the animals increase with increase temperature.
Everything flourishes.
The reason I think that most people run their tanks slightly cooler, is to allow a bit of a buffer incase of failure somewhere.

FWIW every year for about 1 month temps at the surface on the GBR off Cairns sits at about 32 C (about 89-90 F)
