What's everyone using for subrstrate?

I currently have very fine sand, sugar size, and I cannot put a lot of flow in the tank because it causes a sandstorm. I am thinking about putting the fine sand in the sump/refuge for pods and getting a different substrate for the display, maybe only 1" worth just for looks. What would you reccommend? I dont like the look of BB, so that is out of the question. I currently have lps, sps, and zoos in the tank, looking to make it more of a sps tank tho.
Thanks
Jay

I had southdown aka sugar sized oolitic and a mixed reef in my last tank and I was still able to achieve almost 60X turnover. It's all a matter of placement of the ph's and what kind. A 300 gph maxijet can be harder to get proper placement than a 1500 seio or a tunze. Just like business and real estate, location location location.

I have a mix of sugar fine and a larger grade of aragonite. Have to say the larger particles tend to show grunge more easily. I'm actually thinking about getting something like a diamond goby to sift it for me - worried about it burying my corals though. My snails and conch aren't doing the job. I had some problems with drifting because of my powerhead mounting limitations at first, but now that I have magnet holders, I have been able to open my seios up full throttle. I need to get more flow though, so who knows after I add that.

white sand from Lowes mixed with oyster shell, chicken feed, from F&S.
Both cost me about $5 combined

My tank is BB with a cuttingboard cut to fit.. its covered in coraline so you cant even see it...

I like it better and I have less of a problem with po4...

Look in to BB tanks I think is less of a maintenance hassle.

CaribSea Aragonite Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand

Tunze 6060, Mag 9.5 return, Eheim 1250 closed loop. No drifting or movement to speak of.

SOUTHDOWN,(R.I.P.)................

it generally settles down and doesn't cause a storm so easily once it's established. Maybe one day, someone with get a contract like Old Castle and bring it back.

Diamonds. 5 to 7 carats so they don't blow around.

I need to get some diversity in the tank's fauna. Care to do a cup of sand trade? Or more is fine too. :D

Pennies.

All of my inverts die the second I put them in the tank but my fish seem to be disease free.

The pennies sit on a layer of:

I bet that looks really nice next to a copperbanded butterfly. Probably a really cool moonlight view too!

Seriously, I'm going to try that Seachem Kona Coast aragonite in my new tank. Probably 3/4" or so. Looking for something a little differrent and heavier so it doesn't blow around with the flow. Wanted to go BB but can't get use to the look. I can't find any feedback on it so I guess I'll be the lab rat.

Seachem substrate

Seachem substrate

I am looking at the seachem substrate product line as well. I want to go with Meridian. I can't find any info regarding any of the seachem substrate as well. I hope thats not a bad thing. I guess its better than finding a ton of negative comments about it.
