Whats on the bottom of your Sump?

Krazy

In Memoriam
I am curious as to what you guys and gals are using on the bottom of your sumps...

Are you bare bottom ?

Using egg-crate?

Rubber pot holders, or some sort of cushiony material ?

I have egg-crate on the bottom of mine, but I am seriously considering removing it, one good thing about it is that it does collect the detritius quite nicely so its easy to clean out....

I seem to think it reduces noise some but then the more I think about it, I feel it may increase minimal noise that you wouldnt normally hear?

What are you using if anything and why ?

Pros/Cons ??

Thanks :)

K,

I actually use 6 inches of aragonite in my sump, that allows me to have a shallow sand bed in my main tank.

I alwas think of egg crates, etc, to be detrus collectors, without having any detrus 'metabolism' going,

Thanks for your reply Rainer..

I have a 2inch sand bed in my refugium..

What do you do about your skimmer?

This was my main reason behind the bottom lining for the sump... If I were to have sand, I'm afraid it would get sucked into the skimmer's pump...

The egg crate is most defiently a detritus collector, I think it will be in my best interest to remove it... I feel as if you agree with that note ?

You me K,
first compartment-nothing (water from tank), next-live rock, next-heater, next refugium, next-return. I used an old scuba diving boot I cut and wrap around my return to stop vibration noise. Never installed a skimmer! Althought I have a new Euroreef Skimmer still in the box. Saving it for my next move.

I remember the time at your house, you said it was to large to get in the sump I believe right?

What model Euro Reef is it?

:)

My set up is pretty much the same; most are and it seems to work for most.

I did do some extensive reading in the past about sand beds, and, although the topic is as hot as Skimmers and ozone, i do think that 2 inches of sand may be biologically counterproductive? it appears that the gas exchange is too great between 1 and 3 inches. So, it should be 1 or less or 6 and more. (anaerobes have to do with this I believe).

In your sump you could have the perfect environment, if you partition in 3's, of placing 6+ inches of sand in one partition which will act as a remote sandbed. The good news is: it doesn't have to be very big (in terms of diameter). The hight apparently is more of an issue (greater than 6 inches ) - no puns, please :)

Nammy, like your idea about an old scuba mask! Amazing what we can use! I have one of them '4 suction cup powerhead holder' gadgets underneath my pump (cups down) to eliminate vibration

I have some 100% silicone pot holders I bought at Wal-Mart. I havent used them yet, but plan on putting them under my skimmer and return pump to dampen some vibrations.
I do currently have one shoved in between our wooden armed couch and a fan blowing behind the tank. The fan and couch touch due to limited space available. Without the silicone pot holder the fan makes a constant hum and the couch feels like its got a built in massager :D With the silicone pot holder between them you can barely feel the fan and there is no noise. I just hope it works that well for the return pump. I'll put them in the next time I take pumps out for cleaning.

What are those pot holders, what's it look like?
