What's the best live rock?

What's the best pizza topping? It's a matter of opinion. They're all functional. Some look much different than others.

One thing I would personally take into account is where it's from and what kind of regulations they have in place there. In some places they're decimating the reefs.

The more pores the better.
It really is a matter of opinion when it comes to shapes and such. I personally don't like the look of tonga branches.

i like tonga, but i also like fiji rock. so what i do is use the tonga as my base rosk in most of the tank and place the fiji ontop of the tonga so the fish can swim under the entire length of the tank thru the rock work. but i do have some tonga that is out in the open. i also like porus rocks with many holes in them.

but what rock you use is all pretty much your preference.

As has already been said it's really a matter of personal preference, but I like to use rock that won't trap a lot of detritus in it. There is a balance with finding something that is porous and doesn't look like you got it out of the back yard and something with so many crevices that it collects a lot of detritus. Lots of flow can help prevent that, but I have had some rock that would collect a lot of stuff regardless how much flow was on it. As for suppliers, I have always got mine from Premium Aquatics and have been very happy with it.

Ok so dumb question about the corriline that grows on the rock. Are there certain colors that are more naturally occuring on certain rock or is just a matter of what you seed your tank with? I guess I thought that the different rocks tended to bring different colors but that kinda sounds stupid now that I think about it.

find your own thread!

Chill out. You don't own this thread. If someone comes in with a pertinent question, they can ask it. Don't discourage others from learning.

If you really wanna get into it, your original question was pretty dumb.

i with you tucs look online for rock then make your own decision because once you buy it its gonna be in your tank awhile i agree the more prous the better also you dont want a lot of just round shape rocks they are hard to stack onto each other dr fosters has a nice selection and they stand behind what they sell ingnor some people on here ask away if you want to when you do get your rock drop one on him

No my question was not dumb! It was a general new person type of question and was well thought out.
It is meant to stir up many more questions and get many opinions. The end.

now "go on with the Chlorophyll"

If your original post was "meant to stir up many more questions", it seems it was partly successful. So why chase any who would pose a question related to live rock out of the thread?

Not to keep stiring the pot, but xgame and I chatted offline....no hard feelings on either side...I was asking a dumb ?? in the spirt of wondering if it made a difference on the quality of the rock......All is good here :-)

Sooooo......back to good ol reefkeeping :)

Stay away from Florida LR IMO...it holds tooo many bad hitchhikers!! Like gorilla crabs and the ugly aiptasia! :furious:
