Whats the deal?

So i already bought a 70$ pf 300 overflow box for my 40breeder with 20 gal sump.
Now im worried i should drill the tank because i dont want to be not home and have a 30 sec power outage and come home to water everywhere.
Keep in mind i could care less about sound. Im just worried because they say theres a rare risk of the siphon not starting back up.

Well problem is drilling costs money as well as a custom box for the drilled tank. thus putting my 70$ pf300 down the drain.
My buddy uses regular overflow boxes like mine and says i just have to set the water to the correct level and it wont overflow.

So what is it because i really wanna get my tank started. If i can use the pf300 i will and then later look into buying a same size tank but predrilled down the road.

I used an overflow box on a 29g for quite awhile and did not have trouble. IMO a correctly sized return pump makes all the difference. Once you have it set up you can turn the pump off multiple times to make sure everything starts back up OK. Good luck just my 2 cents.

A properly installed pf300 can easily handle a 30 second power outage. Idk what your buddy means about setting the water to the correct level. If do you want to drill the tank, it's def better to do it before you get wet. But this isn't a reason to second guess your whole setup.

I think he means a sump that isn't full to brimnso it can handle residual flow from overflow and plumbing. Bigger issue is overflow failing not the pump as even shallow sump will certainly overflow.


Look into running an airline tube into the u pipe with an air pump to suction out bubbles that form as well as restart it.
