Whats the diff with false personifers, and personifers?

I thought personifers get black on their tails. Meredithi stay solid yellow. Not sure about other differences.

I pulled out the angefish book and you are correct. I would like one, and wanted to see the diff. They look alot alike both very colorfull.
My guess is pricetag besides the strip on the tail? I dont see any personifers FS anywhere.

I don't think they are collected for the trade... I'm sure one of the angel nuts on this forum will chime in shortly :D

FWIW I think meredithi angels are prettier anyways :D :D

True Personifers are found west of the Gulf of Carpentaria, which has very little collection for the trade. I believe they get a bit bigger too.

I just see false thrown around here and there and thought they were in people tanks more. Thanks!
I have always been an angelfish guy, I would like to add
Goldflake
personifer
scribbled
and a few harems of dwarf species like flames, bicolors, coralbeauty, flameback's
I lost my regal and maj in my tank switch last week. My tank sprung a leak and all that survived was my elibi, flame, bicolor, sohal, purple tang while in a 150 gal rubbermaid.
Been looking for a scribbled locally but nothing. A lfs is working on one for me.
I have time because i need to let the tank age a little before adding them. They will be QT for 4-6 weeks.
Ideal size would be small but i have heard that large angels are hard to get eating when small. Is this true?

Chaet personifer around 10cm larger than meridethi according to Endoh Range Western Aust.

I was surprised to hear that one was on the list in CA a month ago. Who knows, they may show up more often this year.

Sorry to hear about your losses due to the leak man!

FWIW, the Tropicorium has a drop-dead gorgeous female scribbled. They've had her for about five-six months now, definitely a proven fish. She'll eat right out of my hand and chase your finger around in the vat - it's great! BTW the only reason I'm telling you this is I decided against it for myself

The other HUGE difference between the true and false personifer is the fact that true personifers are collected in very cold water (mid-high 60's)

Scribbled angels (Chaetodontoplus duboulayi) populate Australia from the West Coast all the way to the East, including the large bay called the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north that separates the two. C. personifer and C. meredithi do not populate that gulf... C. personifer populates to the west of the gulf and C. meredithi to the east... originally this was probably one population, but the turbid Gulf of Carpentaria now has forced the separation of this original population, resulting in the two species. For nearly a hundred all of these were known as C. personifer, but in 1990 the population in the east (the one that is collected for the trade) was redescribed as a new species C. meredithi.

As is the case with many recently diverged populations (like Indian and Pacific Ocean regal angels), you cannot tell the difference between C. personifer and C. meredithi when small (below about 4 inches).

True C. personifer has still not been available in the US, but will be very soon... leave them to nuts like me though... they will be expensive, yet not as "pretty" as C. meredithi... :)

Thanks for the heads up, I have another issue at hand now, My flame angel is dead and my bicolor is sick. Whatever thats killing my angels is a fast killer.
:( I am ready to pull all the fish and let the tank fallow. I dont understand what can kill a fis so quickly. they die within 2 days of showing symptoms.

As Chris said... probably velvet (amyloodinium), which will commonly opportunistically take advantage in stressful situations like this... so you need to blame the circumstances as much as the velvet... very often in this hobby we blame the disease, and not the circumstances that caused the fish to become susceptible...

Thanks, I agree with the velvet, But other signs say not velvet. I dunno but i will pull all the fish out soon, and treat with copper.
Seems just angels are affected.
