whats the difference between brain corals?

Unfortunately the term brain coral is extremely vague and describes animals from completely different families whose only common virtue is the fact that someone, somewhere, once remarked that it reminded them of a human brain. Some can be ridiculously easy to keep and some can be more challenging. It's best to try to get the scientific name of any animal you like so you can make sure you're getting the right info.

I'd agree with Myrphie completely. The only very general information that I'd add is that I've found that the "kinds" of brain coral that are widely known as "open brain" coral like Trachyphylla and those that have a single center section (even if there is an complex shape to it with multiple "mouths") like Symphyllia are more sensitive to intense light and so are more likely to bleach out than the others like Favia, etc. when placed under stronger lights like from PCs to MHs or when MH bulbs are updated.
