i believe i just bought my first echino but i cant really tell the difference between the two. I really really really liked it and my tank needed some red.
it's about a FOOT long and 10" wide....this thing looks like a helmet.
can anyone give me info on what these guys like or dont like?
thanks.

enjoy! i know i will.....haha

well challice is a broad and general name used to describe numerous lps plating corals. echinophyllia, echinopora, echinomorpha, mycedium, oxypora etc are all considered to be challices.
i believe the piece in the picture to be an echinophyllia. excellent color and nice find.

oh btw. just noticed you wanted to know about thier care.
in general challices are very hardy corals and do well under a large range of lighting and flow setups. from pc's to mh and from maxjets to hammerhead closed loops.
i would suggest for that particular piece to be kept in the lower third of your tank (especially if you have mh's). and a medium flow (indirect flow) should work nicely. in my experience red echinos tend to become unhappy and loose alittle of thier luster when up high in the tank.
they dont require feeding but can and will eat and benefit from small meaty bits placed by the mouths. cyclopeeze or brine, mysis, squid, mussels, etc finely diced will work fine.

im just praying that none of my sps fall into the helmet of doom
 Too funny.

Beautiful tank! Even though you run BB (nice choice, BTW), if needed, be sure to turkey baste off any excess detritus that may collect on the coral's tissue, since it makes an excellent collection cup of such (although if there is significant flow, this may not be an issue).

i think detritus collecting shouldn't be too much of a problem.
there is a lot of flow going through the tank. 2-tunze 6100, 2-tunze 6060 and a Dart return pump.

yeah, i'm very happy w/my BB choice. i like the sterile look of a tank and when i move things around i dont want to worry about stirring up a sand bed.

John nice corals and tank. Hows the Tort colony I sold you doing? I need to stop by one of these days and check out your tank.

bluestag,

hey, the tort is doing well. it got most of it's color back. let me khnow when you want to check out the tank.
