whats the difference :pair and mated pair?

hey guys in particular regard to firefish.

what is the difference between pairing them up and getting a mated pair?

but really
pair=two diffrent sexes not yet mated
mated pair=two diffrent sexes and already had a clutch (or whatever you want to call it)
 
I always thought that the description for a pair that had laid eggs was a breeding pair. AFAIK, a mated pair is a male and female that haven't killed eachother.
