Whats the Float switch for on my two Varios Pumps?

I"m building my tank. I have a Varios 6 pump on my return and a Varios 2 on my Reef Octopus Regal 150 ENT Skimmer. Both come with a float switch that I was unfamiliar with. Is this a safety precaution of some kind? Or a control of some kind? I'm hitting up Reef Central before I have a chance to read into the detail in hopes you guys haver some suggestions. You guys always have great ideas. What's the need for these? I will be running a Red Sea Reefer XL 425 system with this.

I too am considering the varios 6 pump. From marinedepot.com's website:

A float switch connection, which allows you to connect a float switch (included in the box) to the controller. This is an added security feature that allows you to shut off the skimmer pump when your waste collector is full or shut off your water pump when your sump water has reached a high or low level. In all, you don't need another module or controller to add a float switch to your system.
