I would like to keep acropora coral the minimalist way any ideas anyone?
^thisIf you’re good on keeping up maintenance, there’s always the old school way of weekly water changes with dosing kalk.
I don’t dose kalk but I do dose All For Reef (AFR). In theory, you could use AFR and a cheaper Jebao or Kamoer doser to dose it through out the day and maintain stable parameters. The only issue is a very successful tank of a larger size may consume a ton of AFR where it becomes more economical to eventually upgrade to a calcium reactor, kalk reactor, or dosing both kalk and AFR.
You know something I really appreciate you responding although at one time year's ago maybe in the year 2007' I purchased a calcium reactor for a 90'g. Reef that i purchased for acropora and I didn't even know how or what the he'll I was doing with the dosing or anything that it didn't work out because I wasn't sure how to start the Co2 tank or regulate the calcium reactor to start a drip into the sump tank water my apologies for rambling on although I would love to keep some acropora in full bloom maybe the hardier ones if at all possible that tolerate a bit of fluctuations per say I'm a 57' year old guy and I enjoy reefing...If you’re good on keeping up maintenance, there’s always the old school way of weekly water changes with dosing kalk.

Thanks griss^this
58 here. Been keeping SW since the early 80s, reefs since 90 and SPS since mid to late 90s. Smallest reef I’ve had was 15g, largest was 450g. Recently upgraded from a 40B to a 150.You know something I really appreciate you responding although at one time year's ago maybe in the year 2007' I purchased a calcium reactor for a 90'g. griss, I truly appreciate all your help I wish we were neighbors I could learn closely from you lol. Yessir I'm going to learn from you on how to dose every day without having to have a automatic doser of sorts...58 here. I’ve kept Acros with and without a Ca reactor. Currently using BRS Alk, Ca and Mg. I have a Ca reactor and regulator built haven’t picked up a co2 tank yet.
You my friend are such a genius and so very helpful a gentleman and a scholarIf you’re going to dose and want to stay low tech, you’ll need a good set of test kits. I like Salifert personally. I also use some of the Hanna checkers. You’ll want Alk, pH, Ca, Mg, Nitrate and Phosphate long term (once the cycle is complete.
One thing that’s changed, we no longer keep PO4 and NO3 at zero.
If you knew me, you would never call me any of those wordsYou my friend are such a genius and so very helpful a gentleman and a scholar![]()
You are appreciated my friend I appreciate in full everything you've discussed and shared with me thus far, I haven't been on reef central for quite some time and now I think I'm getting the bug again...If you knew me, you would never call me any of those words. That’s one of the reasons I’m here, I love following new builds and helping people out.
One thing to keep in mind, the is no single way to keep a tank successfully. Just because something works for me, doesn’t mean it will work for you. Patience and slowly making changes until you figure what’s best for your tank are the key.
AppreciatedI should add the doser is not necessary as you can manually dose the tank, it just makes things easier.
AFR is essentially and all in one, it should maintain alk, Ca, MG and other trace elements. It’s important to note that AFR should not be used to raise your alk but to maintain it. So typically you get you get your alk where you want it. Test over the course of the week to see what it drops to, raise it back up where you want it and then calculate the necessary dosage (based on the instructions)
I’m happy to help. Any time you have questions, let us know. There’s a few of us here who have been in the hobby quite a long time. You are appreciated my friend I appreciate in full everything you've discussed and shared with me thus far, I haven't been on reef central for quite some time and now I think I'm getting the bug again...![]()
