What's the source of algae?

My tank have been up and running for 3yrs. In the beginning I did not have any problems. Parameters were where they we supposed to be. I did water changes weekly. Everything was fine. No algae problems of any kind othe than bubble algae. I started using pappone and had to stop because I started getting crazy algae of all kinds. I have stoped using it and it's been about 3mos. I have hair algae on a piece of two of my rocks. Just a small patch here and there and also behind my Tunze. I don't overfeed and I am trying to trace the source of the algae. My fuge is fed from my tank. I was told not to mess with my fuge and any waste that's in there will eventually be broken down etc. I also have this hazy looking algae on my return spouts and on my upper rock. What's going on with my tank?

A method that I have found very effective is to occasionally have periods of say 1-3 days of no light or very limited light in the tank. This often wipes out scores of algae, which quickly die out with lack of light. Corals can hold out for light much longer than the fast growing algae that can become a problem in our tanks.

One of the reasons I think so many of us have problems with algae is the fact that we provide a very consistant source of light. Once you encounter an algae that just loves the nice stable conditions of a particular tank, it is going to grow and multiply like crazy.

aquariums always have the potential to grow algae. the key is to eliminate/remove as many nutrients as possible, and have the proper herbivorous animals in the tank to take care of anything that tries to grow.
