These are Carib sea life rocks so they came purple. Tank is 4 months old. The past few weeks the rocks have been growing some type of bright green entrustment. It's happening anywhere I scraped the purple off or where I broke them. Basically anywhere rocks are missing the purple finish that came on them. Also directly around these same places there is a darker green/brownish entrustment. It doesn't come off when scrubbing with a toothbrush. I have a bristletooth tang and he nips on it around it and none of it ever comes off. LED lights. What is it?

I'm guessing it's algae. I'll bet it's growing on the purple too but it's harder to see. as long as the tangs are picking at it you should be in good shape. get some snails and hermits for the spots that the tangs cant reach.

This is the CUC I have. Nothing touches it. Past couple weeks I have had my lights on full strength 12 hours a day and it has spread a bit. There's no dizziness, slimey, or hairy to it. Feels like the rock does. Will it turn into a bad algae?

Like hair algae? Tank was started with all NON live stuff. No love rock, no live sand, no live corals. Can algae just start on its own? And what kind of algae just starts on its own? Will lights out and several large water changes kill it? Thanks for your help.

No just generic algae. And yeah. It’ll show up in an empty tank with nothing but a filter and lights. If you cut back on feeding and how long the lights are on it will start to die off. But getting algae in the tank is going to happen. No getting around it
