VERY loud gurgling noise seems to be coming from my overflow - what do you think it is and what can I do to stop it???????

150 gallon tank, basement sump.

Thanks.

the piece of pvc that comes out of your overflow needs a whole drilled in it and a piece of airhose needs to be inserted. this will stop the gurrgleing. if you want to stop by and see how mine looks and better understand what im trying to describe...you are more than welcome to stop by.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend any modifications to your existing overflow plumbing without knowing more about it. Is this a prefabricated standard overflow sold with the aquarium or something that was added after the fact? Describe your plumbing... more details needed (or even better if you have pictures). There are many different overflow setups and noises can be generated by a wide variety of things (i.e. air running through the plumbing, in the overflow box, too little flow from the return pump, etc).

never thought of that.....nice save johnny c ! when mine was gurggeling you guys told me to drill.......but you guys also made me the overflow and i had just drilled my tank for everything..........good call john.......listen to johnnyc.....i'm kind of a newbie

Tank was drilled and box put in by Dave at ARC (excellent job, by the way) and has been running about 3 years.

There is a tube for air at the top of the pvc pipe that goes to basement and a sock in basement sump. The gurgling noise is coming from intake.

I'll clean the return pump and see if that helps. By the way, I'm using a sponge attached to intake pump - is it better to use or not use sponge?

Thanks for help.

take the air tube out nad clean it, overtime they tend to get clogged with salt and detrus. I had to clean mine two weeks ago and now once again it nearly silent.

try some pipe cleaners....they are cheap. you can get them anywhere they sell pipe tabbacco. they might work for ya

+1 boosted

It shouldn't be glued in as you want to be able to take that out and clean it. Mine starts gurgling every 6 months or so, all it takes is a rinse to that tube to stop it.
Good luck Carol!

tube should come out and is probably full of salt creep. The gl*******s on my 72 the tube is in there pretty good

When you put it back in, get some plumber's silicone grease & coat the outside of the tube. It will keep the salt creep on the outside from happening.

Have you changed your flow? Fluctuating water height can create an inconsistent flow through the intake and create a gulping noise.
