My BOP started to stn on me so I pulled the whole thing out. It looks like mold or something growing up it so I cut what was good off and trashed the rest. Any ideas what it might be?
To me it looks like the starting shoots of a nuisance algae called dictyota. The link below shows some images of what it looks like when it matures. http://www.google.ca/search?q=dicty...hNsKRiQK19YHYAg&ved=0CC8QsAQ&biw=1280&bih=857
Once it takes hold in your tank it is hard to control and can quickly overgrow corals & the only fish I've found that will eat this and keep it in check is a naso tang.
For future reference there is no reason why you couldn't cut those live tips off that piece of S.hystrix and grow them out.
What exactly are you referring to? The squiggley lines? If so I stand by my original answer. In all my years of experience with sps I have never seen dead coral tissue look like that.

I agree its not dead tissue as I know what that looks like from my last tank crash. But I don't think its the type of algea your refering to. The one you referanced is a type of seaweed and if i did happen to have that I don't think it would only be on the BOP.
