What's this stuff? Thought it was ich.

Sorry. Yeah the fish didn't make it. I'm bummed, but I learned from it. It seems that the illness, parasitic or bacterial, is specific to this species of fish. I've looked around some more and only found this type of thing on Orange shoulder tangs. Again the fish went from active and eating, to dead in less than a day. I sterilized my quarantine tank and filled it up with water from my usual water change. New fish hopefully tomorrow. Interestingly, with the modification I made to the quarantine tank, a 55 gallon tank now holds exactly 44 gallons. Measured from my Brute can.

Darn that stinks. I had a Potters Angel that I bought look good one morning and when I checked on him at lunch he was laying on the bottom on his side with popeye. He didn't last another hour... Sometimes these things go so fast a diagnosis is impossible. I can't imagine what it was on your fish. One of those things that maybe only a microscope could tell.

I would NOT use any water from your DT in your QT. Especially after having something in your DT. I would use new water and put in API Quick Start of BioSpira to get the good bacteria in the tank immediately. I have had good success with API and adding fish to QT at the same time.

The fish in question was never in my main system. That is free of any nasty stuff. Except aptaisia I guess. The quarantine tank had been dormant since my last batch which was a trio of anthias which are now in my main display and healthy. I fantom feed lightly and then use bio-spira when introducing new fish to quarantine.

Good to hear! What kind of anthias did you buy and how many? I am hoping to get 3 or so for my 180 but need some colorful anthias!

I rather doubt that it is a species specific parasite/disease. It may just be that only this particular tang exhibits these specific discolorations as reaction to it.

If someone has this the next time I would suggest to give Chloroquine Phosphate a shot - I'm starting to believe that this could have been velvet.
