What's up with this snail behavior?

My power head is pointed at the front of the tank, and every day a couple different snails search out what appears to be the highest turbulence area...and attach themselves there for hours.

Why do they do this?

Strange. I have some very small snails that all like to hang out together, so it could be more that than anything else. I have no idea why it would consistently happen in such a high flow area though. Only reasonable guess I could make is that there's something that grows better in high high flow that they like to eat.

Maybe they're trying to get algae off their shells?

I think you were right, that they could taste / smell this copper-colored algae before I noticed it.

I took off the part you see here and it was swarmed and scarfed clean within a couple hours.
