First off ... many thinks to the ones who have provided the valuable feedback to my previous inquiry into a 365 gallon tall glass display tank!

Think I'm going to pass.

Since then, I've moved on to this 225 Gallon acrylic tank that's 73"Long x 20"Deep x 30.5" Tall!
It seems it's made of 2 pieces 1/4" acrylic all around rather than just using a single 1/2" all around. What's the deal with this idea?

I like the tank because I think it's a fair price for a used tank of this capacity but uncertain as to why this particular design.

Thanks for the help!

Where did you find this tank? who makes it? 1/4" sounds suspect to me.........also, your dimensions caculate out to 192.8 gallon. TinMan

I was reading somewhere when acrlic is doubled up like that it adds strenght. How true this is? I am not sure....

Thanks Timmye!
Actually, I remember the guy telling me something along those lines but I just thought it's because he was trying to sell me his tank.
I'll keep that in mind.

Thanks a bunch!

It's a myth based on the concept of plywood strength. One figures that since plywood is stronger because you are crossing the grains, then acrylic would be the same way, nope - cell cast acrylic has no grain whatsoever. Not only that but the laminating of the acrylic stresses the material, just not a good thing.
Now extruded materials such as Lexan are laminated in this fashin to make bullet resistant maerial such as Lexguard but these are not glued together and do in fact delaminate. This process is done moreso for cost savings rather than strength.
It just doesn't work with acrylic at all.

Wow!

James ... you are the MAN !

How in the world do you know so much about acrylics?

Would you happen to know how much it would cost for a custom made 225G measuring 72 x 24 x 30.5 ???

Thanks a bunch.

It's been my job for the last 20yrs or so, so I it kinda comes with the territory ;)
Send me a PM if you really want that kind of info. I can't discuss such things in the forums, kinduva TOS violation thing - hope you understand :)
FWIW, I've seen some great deals every now and then through the RC classifieds. Not sure of your location so actually getting the tank might require some shipping (or a day's drive) but could well be worth it. I hear Craigslist is a good resource as well.
