What's wrong with my xenia???

This is a xenia I've got for two week. About four days ago I notice something wrong, almost of polyps are shrink.

Many polyps have wound at it's stalk and the polyps will detach soon.

As you see, it lose many polyps.

Does anyone have ever met the problem like this and do you know what cause the problem?

cant really help without knowing ALL of the parameters.. Test for all the basics...somethings' gotta be outta wack.

I test last night . I plan 20% water change tomorrow

pH : 8.2
Alk : 8 dKH (now 11)
temp: 27-29
salinity : 1.021sg

NO2 : 0
NO3 : 2
PO4 : 0

your SG is way low. You need to get that up to 1.025, but DONT do it rapidly...do it over a few days.

And how did you test for SG? Was it a refractometer or hydrometer?

Most people think it's fine to be at least above 1.020 because most hydrometers still show that in the "good" range, while 1.024 usually is the top of the "good" range on hydrometers.

ya, well most hydrometers are crap to begin with If your hydrometer says that 1.020 is in the good range, i'd completely ignore it.

I agreee with sir_dude. There is no evidence that we should keep our salinity anything other than 1.026. Besides that, your alkalinity is low. I'd get it up to at least 9 or 10dkh. Xenia don't like wildly fluxuation Alk imo.

specific gravity is not the same as salinty
the avg salinity of ocean water is 35
which in turn puts the sg anyhwere between 1.024-1.026 ish
also a 20% water change is bad news unless it is absolutly needed
while u might right the wrong with your new purchase everything else in your tank that has acclimized to your current conditions would become stressed

do u have any inverts or fish that could b possible nipping off the polyps?
emerald mithrax crabs and others should b kept w extreme caution if u have a full blown reef
they can become voratiously carniverous and eating pretty much whatever it can catch

What kind of lighting do you have? My Xenia loves light, and Iodine.

I thought 20% was pretty standard?

I must be stressing the hell out of my tank doing water changes sometimes as much as 50 percent.

Xenia is looking good! Glad the xenias are doing better for you.
Lately with all these xenia demise threads, I'm glad I've got a green thumb for xenia.......haven't had any problems with them in my tank and all.
