Whats you max temp?

Hey all,

Today is the first day that I am trying my MH's on for an 8 hour pd. So far(currently hour 6) the temp is up to 80.4. I have read many different opinions that say it should be 78, others say it can go up to 82. I do not want the temperature to cause problems with algae/fish/corals/bacteria so I was wondering what you all think. What should be the max temp you allow your reef tank with fish to get to before shutting the MH's down as to not cause problems?

I personally would like it to stay at 78 but I would need to add another fan, or upgrade to a different cooling set up.

My max is 78F, my minimum is 77F.

Wow so you give it no room to change. I also read that its ok if its a 2-3 degree change during the day. That shouldnt cause much stress on the fish and higher temps will help corals grow faster and fish metabolism be faster and them grow faster also. I think im going to get a different cooling system to try and keep it at 78-79 with the MH on. Kinda hard tho with those bad boys running.

Whenever a thread like this is started you'll notice everone stating their optimal temps and from what I've seen 77-81 is where most people will be. When you start getting up into the 83-84 area then you're pushing the limit. On most of the reefs the temps can go much higher but not for extended periods of time. If you shoot for 77-81 you'll be fine.

Awesome. So my current temp raise from 78 to 80 over the course of 8 hours(if it stays at the current temp) will be fine. Just wanted to make sure I wouldnt end up killing anything cuz of the temp getting too high. Not a fan of fish soup :(

Mines varies from 72 (winter) to 83 (summer). I don't run heaters or chillers in my garage. I ran like this for a couple of years now without issues although I don't recommend it to everyone. I have a mix reef with focus on softies (no clams or expensive SPS, etc).

Annual range is about 72 to 83, daily fluctuation is about 3 degrees. That's on four nano tanks that are 5 to 10 years old.

A four degree fluctuation is acceptable. You don't want to go any more than that though...a highest temp of around 84 is alright. 86 is danger zone as any higher is pushing death for all! Most reefs in the Mesoamerican reef zone are around 84 in the summer.

My tanks ran for about 6 years at a summertime max of 86. At 88 the lights went off.

I chose those set points because 86 is the average summertime high temperature for coral reefs worldwide. Virtually all corals, if properly acclimatized, can stand temperatures up to ~88, though above that some of the less tolerant species begin to suffer stress.

I keep mine between 81 and 82. I use my RKL to hold it there. I used to keep it down at 78, but noticed that my corals looked a little more full and healthy at a slightly higher temp. I think you'll find that the most common range is 78-80, the next common 81-82, and then so on on either side of the bell curve.

max is 74, min is 71

i choose the lower range for more o2 saturation. Most studies give the minimum low as 68, and the maximum high 86. They publish that those are the lethal rates if sustained at those temps. I have great growth and color at the low range of the scale.

Mine is set with a controller at 79.6 and it will get up to 80 to 80.3 with my 2 250MH on a 60g with 10 gal sump. I am going to start making my controller leave the fans on for about 45min after lights go out. I notice after my MH's go out and the fans shut down my temp will start going up over 80.Just leave your fans on alittle longer with the cool down of MH. I have duel fans on my hood. GL

Mine is set for 78 but it sometimes gets up to 84 in the summer. No adverse effects. There is a great thread in the advanced subforum (I think...) where there is a great discussion on temperature fluctuation. Greenbean laid out a lot of great info. Basically, don't worry to much about a few degrees fluctuation on a daily basis.

Mine has hit 85-86 a few times over the last few summers. Put a fan in this year, only runs with the halides. Keeps the tank under 79 so far, but summer hasnt hit yet, I dont expect to see much of a difference though. Only reason I really installed a fan anyways is because the tank seperates the kitchen and living room. Helps keep the house temp more even. My 180 seems to affect the room temp quite a bit.
